This tooth critter shows up in late May here in Rhode Island and is great fun on light tackle rods. They first arrive thin and underfeed schools and before long they start to school up in late August and put on some of the most amazing surface show you've ever seen. These fish are strong and when you latch into a 10lber your sure to know about it. Make sure you have wire because they take everything they eat. We like any 9-10wt fly rod with a floating line or sometimes a full sink if the school is not showing. Leaders in the 8'-9' range in 12-20lb is fine but make sure you have some knotable bite wire to save your flies. "Goto" Flies for Bluefish Poppers All white, chart, yellow Size 1/0-4/0. Any big, flashy profiled flies. Any of your worst patterns or stuff you just don't mind these buggers biting off! |
