Atlantic Bonito AKA "Bones"
Atlantic Bonito

These small mackerel move into our waters in late July and August. Some call them "bones" or "nito" locally. These fish are fast and can test even the best of light tackle anglers. They like to feed on small silversides and squid and are a blast on light tackle gear. Light spinning rods with about 100+ yards of line and a good drag is best suited for these small speedsters. We use small casting metals like Deadly Dick's, Yozuri L-Jack Jigs, and the Ava Maria's to get them to eat on the spinning gear. For the fly angler any 8-10wt fly rods with intermediate or full sink fly lines is suitable. 8'-9' of 12-20lb of fluorocarbon leader is fine.
