| False Albacore AKA "Little Tunny" |
The "albies" or "fat albert's" visit us every year in late August. These fish move into the local water in search of small baitfish. They school up and move very fast so be ready with all your casting skills. This is one of my favorite species to take on the fly rod and we at URC specialize in catching them. For the spinning rods we like a small 7' outfit with a nice amount of line on it. We use Deadly Dicks and Yozuri L-Jack jigs as well as the Ava Maria which can be deadly. For the fly rodder any 9-10wt fly rod is fine. Intermediate and full sinking lines work best for us. Leaders should be 9' with 12-15lb fluorocarbon tippet. these fish can be tough some days so be prepared to test your skills. Strong and outwitting this fish is always a treat on any light tackle rod."Goto" Flies for False Albacore Surf Candies Size 1-1/0 Crease Flies in all colors Size 1/0-3/0 Skok's Bonito Deceivers white, blue/white, olive white Size 1/0 Clouser Minnows all white, seafoam green/white, olive/white, chart/white size 1-2/0 lots of flash added.
